Who We Are

Nias Selatan (South Nias) Regency is a regency in North Sumatra province, Indonesia. In 2010, the regency covered an area of 1,625.91 square kilometres and according to the 2010 census had a population of 289,876. Its capital is Teluk Dalam. Apart from the southern portion of Nias Island, the regency also includes the smaller Batu Islands (Pulau-pulau Batu) to the south, lying between Nias and Siberut.

Nias is an internationally famous surfing destination. The best known surfing area is Sorake Bay, close to the town of Teluk Dalam, on the southern tip. Enclosed by the beaches of Lagundri and Sorake, the bay has both left and right-hand breaks. As they wait for waves, surfers can often see sea turtles swimming below. There are also two consistent, world-class waves in the nearby Hinako Islands, Asu and Bawa. Many lesser-known, high-quality surf spots with low crowds await adventurous travelers.

Transportation

To reach Nias, there are daily Wings Air and Garuda Air from Medan to Gunung Sitoli; there were ferries from Sibolga to Gunung Sitoli, Teluk Dalam, or Lahewa every day; before the Asian financial crisis hit Indonesia, there was a daily flight from Medan to Gunungsitoli. Now the transportation is much better and the flights are five times a day from Mondays to Sundays each week. Internally, the road system is in a very good condition. Externally the air and ferry links are also reliable. There are two ferry terminals (Gunungsitoli and Teluk Dalam) and an airport (Binaka, near G. Sitoli) on the island, serviced mainly from Sibolga and Medan respectively. Since the 2005 earthquake, transportation has improved to cope with the increase in travel needs for reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts. Wings Air and Garuda Air are the airlines that fly to Gunungsitoli.

Telukdalam Port

Teluk Dalam is a sub-district in the South Nias regency, North Sumatra province, Indonesia. Its area is 490 km2 (190 sq mi). In English, Teluk Dalam means "Deep Gulf". As of 2004, Teluk Dalam has 39 villages with a population of 76,750 and a population density of 157/km². Teluk Dalam has various tourist sites, such as Sorake Beach, Lagundri Beach and Bawömataluo which hosts Nias traditional houses of hundred years ago.

Historical Matters

Teluk Dalam port came about after the original port in the south of Nias Island was in Lagundri Bay. In 1883, the resulting tsunami from the Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java washed the original Teluk Lagundri trade village away. The trade village was moved to the present position in Teluk Dalam.
